Is RF safety on the ham radio Technician exam?

Yes.

The 2026-2030 Technician Class FCC Element 2 Question Pool (in use July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2030) gives RF safety its own group, T0C, with 13 questions. Each exam takes one question from each of the pool's groups, so every exam has 1 question on the topic, out of 35 (26 correct to pass).

What you need to know

Radio signals are non-ionizing radiation: they do not carry enough energy to cause chemical changes in cells or damage DNA, but strong RF energy can heat body tissue. The FCC therefore sets maximum permissible exposure limits, and those limits change with frequency because the body absorbs RF energy more readily at some frequencies than at others.

Exposure near an antenna depends on the transmitter power, the frequency, the distance to the antenna and the antenna's radiation pattern. Duty cycle matters too: a transmitter that is on only half the time produces half the average exposure. The station licensee is responsible for making sure nobody is exposed above the limits, and should evaluate the station again whenever the transmitter or antenna system changes. Touching an antenna while it transmits can cause an RF burn.

Sample questions from the pool

T0C01

What type of radiation are radio signals?

Correct answer: D. Non-ionizing radiation

T0C07

What hazard is created by touching an antenna during a transmission?

  1. A. Electrocution
  2. B. RF burn to skin
  3. C. Exposure to ionizing radiation
  4. D. All these choices are correct

Correct answer: B. RF burn to skin

T0C13

Who is responsible for ensuring that no person is exposed to RF energy above the FCC exposure limits?

  1. A. The FCC
  2. B. The station licensee
  3. C. Anyone who is near an antenna
  4. D. The local zoning board

Correct answer: B. The station licensee
