AI Boom Economics: Profits, Compute Costs, and Bubble Risk

Über diese Kapsel

AI companies are burning billions on computing power while their path to profit stays murky. These views split between a bubble destined to pop, a business that can reach profitability through cost-cutting and smarter spending, and doubts that current data can settle the question at all. Weighing them helps you judge how much of the boom is real.

“I keep hearing that OpenAI and Anthropic claim their inference is profitable — is that actually true or are they being misleading?”

Allgemeine KI

“Short answer: it can be true in a narrow “gross margin on paid inference” sense, while still being misleading if people hear it as “the AI business/company is profitable.”

When OpenAI/Anthropic or investors say “inference is profitable,” they usually mean something like:

For a paid API call or paid ChatGPT/Claude usage, the revenue received exceeds the direct cost of serving that query.

That is plausible. But it does not necessarily mean:

  • the company is profitable overall;
  • subscriptions are profitable for every user;
  • free-tier usage is profitable;
  • the cost of training frontier models is covered;
  • the huge GPU clusters and R&D budgets are fully paid back.

The key distinction: contribution margin vs full profitability

There are several layers:

“Narrowly: sometimes yes. Economically: often misleading.

The key trick is that “inference is profitable” can mean “the marginal token call has positive gross margin if we ignore training, R&D, datacenter buildout, revenue sharing, free users, and underutilized GPUs.” Under that definition, OpenAI and Anthropic can plausibly claim profitability. But the full business is still deeply strained: inference currently consumes more than half of revenue for both companies, OpenAI’s infrastructure spend is estimated around $60B/year against roughly $13B projected 2025 revenue, and both firms use profitability measures that exclude huge training costs.

A good way to read the claim:

1. If they mean marginal paid API calls, the claim can be true

For a paid enterprise/API customer, inference can be gross-margin-positive if GPUs are heavily utilized and pricing is high enough.

Electric Cars and Emissions: Batteries, Grids, and Lifecycle Tradeoffs

Electric Cars and Emissions: Batteries, Grids, and Lifecycle Tradeoffs

Whether an electric car beats gas depends on how you count its full footprint, from battery production to the grid that charges it. These findings weigh lifecycle emissions, material and battery sourcing, charging at cleaner hours, and how regional grids change the math. You can decide how EVs fit a cleaner future even where the power is still dirty.
